Cardiac Rehab

Putnam General Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase II program is fun, challenging, personalized and outcome-oriented. It's based on the guidelines of the American Heart Association and serves our friends and neighbors of Putnam and surrounding counties.

What is Cardiac Rehab Phase II?

Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase II is designed for individuals who have recently experienced a cardiac event and have been discharged from the hospital. It is prescribed by a physician.

Most patients exercise three days per week for a period of 12 weeks. All exercising patients are continuously supervised and monitored for ECG, blood pressure, and heart rate. It is designed to help strengthen the heart muscle of patients who have experienced a heart problem.

Our program incorporates education, counseling, and exercise to help you reach your optimal level of well-being and self-sufficiency.

Insurance/Medicare will typically cover the following cardiovascular conditions determined to benefit from cardiac rehab:

--Heart attacks
--Heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, angina or heart failure
--Heart procedure surgeries including coronary artery bypass grafts, heart transplants, or valve replacements
--Coronary catheterization, including angioplasty (balloon angioplasty) and placement of stents.

How does it work?

Once the referral process is complete, a customized plan of care is developed specifically for you. It includes exercise that will start at a low pace on several machines such as a treadmill and recumbent bike. The length of time spent on each machine is determined by your heart rate and your ability. You'll learn about the role of nutrition, communication, medications, and stress in a healthy future and how to eliminate any key risk factors such as smoking. You and your doctor will receive progress reports regularly.

Some goals of the program are:

To combat the progression of cardiac disease
To improve resting blood pressure
To reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels
To increase activity levels and duration
To improve psychological and emotional well-being
